What is A/DOOR? We are going to do our best not to give away what actually happens at an A/DOOR session- an online ‘artsperiment’ currently taking the world by storm one story at a time. Your stories!
The creator of the experiment, Alice Frank, calls it a listening project.
It's really simple, Alice says. The experience of isolation is far too prevalent and is completely unnecessary in the world since we all have so much love and attention to give. The root of every person in the world is the desire to be known, seen, and heard. How often do you feel fully seen and heard?
What we can tell you is that you choose one door among three by clicking it and are transported to a zoom room in which you are one-on-one with a soft and receptive-looking human. Your job in that moment is to "tell a story from your life" (no need to wait to be prompted, btw. They sit silently and are ready to receive your story from the get-go.)
When you are done sharing your story is when the art part of the experiment begins. It is a surprise, yet you can go every week and it will never get old. A $10 contribution is accepted to save your spot, cover costs, and support various voices NOT heard (in the past it was GoFundMe’s for Elijah McClain and Breonna Taylor.)
This is not therapy. We are not licensed in that. We are an art experiment! There are so many ways that healing happens. And sometimes it is a byproduct of being listened to. I think that if we were all totally aligned in giving and receiving, we'd be far more affectionate- for example, almost constantly giving massages to whoever is within arm's reach. And we'd listen to each other so much more and reflect back. Paying for massage and therapy is extremely valid and sometimes a necessity. But if we open the valves on our ears, our hearts, and hands, becoming more available in these ways, we would need to pay for it much less. It is possible to integrate being heard into the fabric of what it is to be human on a day-to-day. Now, just to be clear, ADOOR has nothing to do with massage. Alice was just drawing a parallel. It does, however, have everything to do with listening.

I find it amazingly empowering to us all that we can make up how we use these technological tools, how we live, how we 'spend' our attention. We can give our attention to people we've been raised to see as strangers and find that there is really no such thing. We get to make up how isolating or integrated our society is. We can create better channels for distributing the resources of love and attention that we are an abundance of. Hopefully, ADOOR is one such avenue.
That isolation has felt extremely real to Alice at different times of her life.
This is the part in the human story that we reveal that isolation was an illusion all along! All we need to do is make it possible for people to reach out and be there for them.
